• Moss and algae. The wetter climate and fog exposure support moss on north and shaded slopes. Zinc strips at the ridge keep it in check — without them, we see visible moss by year 5–7.
• Wind off the bay. Summer bay winds are steady rather than gusty, which works at ridge caps and starter strips over years. Winter storms occasionally bring 40–50 mph gusts.
• Heavier rain load. 20 inches versus 12–14 in East County means gutters, valleys, and flashing details get tested more often.
• Fog and humidity. Shingles stay damp longer, which accelerates biological growth but reduces thermal stress compared to inland cities.

Permits are issued by the City of Hercules Planning Division at 111 Civic Drive. It's a small office — plan check turnaround is usually quick.

Recent Hercules Projects

Victoria by the Bay, October 2024 — Bayfront townhome with rust streaks on the south-facing fascia. Shingles still had 5–7 years of life, but every galvanized fastener in the field was pitted and chimney step flashing had holes. Targeted repair: new stainless step flashing, new ridge cap with stainless nails, replaced visible rusted fasteners, pressure-washed moss off the north slope. Bought them significant extra life without a full tear-off.

A $1,800 repair instead of a $16,000 replacement — because we caught the hardware failure before it reached the decking.

Refugio Valley, February 2024 — Winter storm blew the ridge cap off a 1996 two-story. Tarped that night in a downpour. Permanent repair included new ridge cap with stainless fasteners, added a ridge vent the original build didn't have, and sealed chimney flashing that was the real leak source.

Ohlone Heights, 2023 — 1985 hillside custom with a cedar shake roof way past its life. Homeowner wanted the cedar look but the HOA allowed synthetic alternatives. Installed Brava synthetic shake with Class A fire rating, lifetime warranty, and stainless fasteners. Looks like real cedar from the street.
